surround.sound.subjective.testing

i’m conducting a listening test from 9th until the 17th of december 2010 from 10am to 4pm daily inside the semi-anechoic chamber in newton building at the university of salford, manchester.

i need as many test subject as i can get and would appreciate your participation. this test would take a maximum of 10 minutes of your time and  is a part of my project on comparing 5.1 surround sound against ambisonics for a sports production.

of course there will be complementary sweets and snacks as a thank you for your time.

muffins for all.

if you can fill out this form and pick your time and date of participation, i’d be quite grateful.

here’s a little taste of what’s in store…

thanks for your time.

back.man.turner.over.drive

last night a dj did not save my life.

nor did a little dancer come dancing to my door.

last night, she certainly did not say ‘oh baby, i feel so down…’

because that, that is what i said when i heard that susan philipsz – a greasy little bag of pipes who insists on adding extra unnecessary letters to her name, in these tough economic times™ does she have no idea the value of a z (it’s 10 by the way) – won the 2010 turner prize at tate britain.

this annoys me as for the last  while i have been working with ambisonics and looking into surround sound and 3d sound etc and had read a small piece about a former turner prize winner in the metro…

oooooh, it’s a good paper

with both of these in my mind, contemporary art and three dimensional sound, i was trying to piece them together and conjure up a way to use 3d sound as an art installation and after a bit of reading up on it, there had never been a turner prize winner who used audio as their entry. now i’m not implying that i would be first in line for any prize of any sorts, though my mammy does say i’m the best, but it was something i would like to look into a bit more and perhaps roll into action next year. though i only have one full idea right now, not quite enough to fulfill an entire exhibition. or is it…

so congratulations to susan philipsz, who sang her way to victory last night despite screaming art students protesting about how much they have to pay for pva glue, well done.

you win.

fucking art students.

having been asked what my favourite spaceships from tv and/or film are, i had a ponder. and then pondered some more. then watched some films, one more ponder and then compiled a list. and it’s got bloomin’ pictures and everything.

shiny

uss.enterprise

ncc-1701 d  (the next generation, not ncc-1701 from the original series) mainly because it’s what i got to know first i think. i became much more familiar with captain jean luc and co before discovering there was trekking afoot before him. the one thing that does put me off this ship is my sister had one as her alarm clock and you used to have to take the plate of the ship off and on to stop the alarm which was the alarm you hear on the bridge, followed by ‘the enterprise is under attack, get up and do something’, or whatever the klingon option was. the enterprise is probably the first image that comes to mind when someone says spaceship

millennium.falcon

no list of anything is complete without it, no list. cool ship with a cooler captain. i imagine that the falcon is now rented out for hen parties and has knacker sluts shouting out the window at blokes. but then again, in space, no one can hear you scream.

the.tardis

i’m not much of a doctor who fan, mostly due to cunty tennant taking over from a near perfect chris eccelstone, but a giant time travelling spaceship inside an old english police phone box is pretty awesome. and i reckon, once in, after smashing enough buttons i could call up the cctv footage which is bound to have billie piper getting changed. woof.

discovery.one

from 2001: a space odyssey, possibly the most relaxing film i’ve ever seen. so relaxing in fact, that i drifted off while watching it, then woke up and thought i was tripping off me wagon. part of my kubrick stint recently. i much prefer full metal jacket… if only there was a cross between the two. nam in space. yes please.

tie.fighter

you may know it from the opening sound of ash’s album 1977. or you may know it from that film that came out the same year. peow!

starbug

from red dwarf, much prefer it to the actual red dwarf ship. my love for this is enhanced by dwayne dibley.

the.righteous.indignation

where S.P.A.C.E (sentient protoplasm against colonial encroachment) members jenny, blinky and deadeye duck followed the orders of one captain bucky o’hare. i think this is where my brief affair with buckfast came from. ahh, the long hot summer of 2004… crescent warrior (not a spaceship but a trawler that doubled as a buckfast playground at night) we hardly knew ye.

thunderbird.3

the red one. used for rescue missions and maintenance operations on thunderbird 5 (the space station) my favourite of the 5. way cooler than thunderbird 2, which looks like a fish made of snot, that was found down the back of the sofa.

klingon.bird.of.prey

just looks cool dunnit?

she’s gone from suck to blow! nuff said really.

the.forgotten

yup

so i sort of forgot about this blog for a little while but it has my full attention right now, as i am posting on it.

i will update this in the next few days and get you up to date with my goings on. but until then i will let you feast your eyes on me. in a onesie. with the dog.

f*ckity bye.

watch.this.my.space

i set up a new myspace.

www.myspace.com/layquietawhileaudio

i have only literally signed it up now. i’ll pimp the shit out of it during the week. hopefully get a track or two up there. i had previously been on myspace as ‘wandering eye audio’ and got very very lazy. so rather than go back to a place that didn’t motivate me, i thought i would tie it in with the blog.

that’s about it for now. check it out if you can.

thank you.

here’s a picture of that fawking guy i mentioned earlier.

guy.fawkes.into.a.bar

you know the rest.

it’s bonfire night and i am convinced that there is a war breaking out in salford, the noise of the array of fireworks all around is astonishing. it’s created qite a thick fog and i can’t see far out the window, which isn’t a bad thing. where i live looks like one of those high class prisons where they put sex offenders locked up together so the general population can’t harm them.

but that’s just what i think. nice benches though.

me and my partner in crime will be taking on the challenge of a film soon, as well as our interviews we are recording/filming, and it will be shot and edited entirely on mobile phones. gonna be an interesting one, we’re thinking of focusing it on train stations. specifically the platforms with the goodbyes and emotions, as well as the sprint to get to the train before it pulls off.  keep your wandering eye here as i’ll probably put up a few clips during the process. clips from the radio show should be up here next week to.

and keeping on the subject i’ll leave you with this video of one guy with a camera in his noggin. a view from inside the fire.

f*ckity bye

good.evening.glastonbury

it’s that time agin to start the speculations of who is going to play at glastonbury next sumnmer. tickets have been and gone and i got one. which is all that matters really. it’s the 40th year but it’s the 30th festival.

that’s maths.

so jarvis cocker has said he is playing and then the media got their hopes up and started spreading the rumours that pulp were reforming which was shot down quick smart by jc. a shame but anyone with a bit of cop on knows that they won’t be getting together anytime soon.

next up is robert plant, who recieved the Q outsanding  contribution to music award this week. he had a chat to michael eavis, founder and organiser of  the glastonbury festivals, who asked him if he would be interested in a slot at the festival next year. of course plant said yes. the question now is who will he be playing with, will it be the strange sensation, the band behind him for the crittically acclaimed ‘mighty rearranger’ or will it be his grammy award winning partner alison krauss, the bluegrass songstress whom he paired with on the masive hit ‘raising sand’…

or could it be.. y’know… the other guys.

time will tell.

see you at glastonbury bitches.

f*ckity bye

tahoma

having recently been speaking about fonts and typeface, the general consensus being that times new roman is a load of balls, i’ve decided to celebrate mine.

tahoma

did you know.. that tahoma was originally designed as a bitmap rather than an outline font. interesting stuff you say. yeah… course it is.

the main reason i like it though, is because it reminds me of this masterpiece.

…..

ok. f*ck tahoma, i just wanted an excuse to post that clip. everyone knows i’m an arial man.

f*ckity bye
